January 4, 2008, Rumour |   |

Leeds Festival Rumours and News // Rage against the machineAt the moment I am currently getting a lot of information from a very reliable source and they seem to think that the headliners for Leeds Festival 2008 are pretty much already confirmed! So on behalf of Johnboy and Leedsfest.org here is our prediction for this years headliners:

  • Rage Against The Machine
  • Kasabian
  • The Verve/Metallica

Lets see how things pan out over the next few months leading up to the festival.

EDIT - this news is now out of date. Please check the related links

Ha ha! As far as I am aware, only Kasabian are definitely confirmed, the other two, however, are extremely likely!

well, i think its a fair prediction so i thought i would slap it on as ours. Its only a small site after all :D

No worries mate - like you say, I’m pretty confident that those are the headliners, unless something drastic happens!

cool. Well i’m sure it will be fine to report a change at a later date.

like i said! thanks again for all the tipoffs :)

My only concern is, have Kasabian got 2 hours of headlining material?

Apart from that, it sounds like a good deal!

    January 5th, 2008 7:02 am

I think the only concern i have is, do they have 2hrs of GOOD headlining material? :P

    thanks for the comment!

I really don’t want The Verve to headline, their just not big enough. We need someone huge for that day like Green Day. it would be an insult to the festival for them to headline. They should be third down

The other two would be awesome though.

    Johnboy
    January 5th, 2008 9:30 am

I think they have just started to record their 3rd album, which should be out by June/July. I saw them headline the NME stage at T In The Park last year, and they were excellent.

    admin
    January 5th, 2008 9:57 am

three albums will be more than enough material then, along with a couple of new songs..?

Do you think they will be able to pull off the larger stage at Leeds Johnboy?

Stuart, Thanks for the comment. Its a shame i don’t have some kind of reply feature on here!

Greenday are rumoured to play and i believe they played in 2006. I went and watched and i was less than impressed, although i was quite far away so i wasn’t really in the atmosphere.

    thanks for the comment :)

    Stuart Edwards
    January 5th, 2008 10:42 am

Green Day played in 04 i believe, just before American idiot.

I can appreciate them trying to get another English Band to headline on the sunday, but the simple fact is that sunday demands one of the biggest bands in the world, who are going to go out with a bang. We’ve had Green Day, Foo Fighters, Muse and Red Hot Chili Peppers recently, The Verve are just not on that level. Radiohead would be fantastic, Oasis despite not being particularly rocky would be a much more popular choice.

But then again this is Leeds, not Glastonbury. We need somebody worthy, i can appreciate if FR have had to fork out a shell for Rage (it’l be worth it) but we got Pumpkins and Chili’s this year whom both are massive.

    Johnboy
    January 5th, 2008 11:02 am

Admin - yeah, I reckon they can pull off a headline slot at Leeds. They have some cracking tunes to get the crowd going, and they will be ten times better than Razorlight last year!

Stuart - I think they are still tryin to get another ‘big name’ headliner, so maybe Kasabian or The Verve will end up as second in the lineup?

    admin
    January 5th, 2008 11:26 am

I don’t think that they would play the Verve on the sunday night slot. Like you say, they are just not a big festival band. I think they could handle the main stage well though. I can’t really see them in a tent can you?

And yes, your right about Greenday playing in 2004, i got confused there for some reason!

I’m hoping for rage on the Sunday night, that would be mental!

    Stuart Edwards
    January 5th, 2008 12:02 pm

I’m hoping for something like the following:

Rage Against the Machine - Friday

    Kasabian/The Killers/Arctic Monkeys - Saturday

    Green Day/Radiohead/GNR - Sunday

With one or both of the two which didn’t make saturday headliner on the Sunday.

    Also praying for Feeder….

As for The Verve, i don’t want to hear Bittersweet Symphony a minute after 9:30 on Sunday.

    Ryyder
    January 6th, 2008 6:28 am

If that comes true it looks like the real headliner would be RATM, and that would be the main attraction-Kasabian are not up to par and there music(in my opinion) would look rubbish in comparison, and like has already been said they don’t have enough good material for a headliner spot.
The verve in my opinion are past it, bittersweet symphony would just annoy people, so hopefully the verve is changed, Kasabian is alright(ish) and RATM would be godly.

    admin
    January 6th, 2008 12:37 pm

Yeah if this is true, rage will definitely be the Sunday night slot. They will by far attract the biggest crowd. I imagine The Verve have some new material coming out if they have started playing? I’m sure they will probably play Bitter Sweet though. I can’t work out if it will be cringe worthy or awesome yet…I do quite like Richard Ashcroft and i think he’s a very talented writer.

anyway, thanks for the comment and yeah, we are all keeping our fingers crossed for RATM :)

    Stuart Edwards
    January 7th, 2008 5:14 am

Nah Rage would be on Friday as the ‘heavy’ weekend headliner like Pumpkins and Pearl Jam. They’ll be Sunday at Reading. (If they play…please god, do it)

Just get Muse, Foo’s, Green Day or someone on the sunday slot and we’re sorted for a good weekend. Oh and if it were up to me, The Killers or Arctic Monkeys would take Saturday’s new band slot.

    admin
    January 8th, 2008 6:28 am

Not the Arctic Monkeys again :(. Last time i saw them i thought they were awful. I don’t like the fact that they seem to play on this “amature” thing, they are professional now :)

Thanks for all the comments btw Stuart!

radiohead apart of leeds fest does anyone know in 2008?!

    im hopin for

    Friday - RATM
    Saturday - Radiohead
Sunday - Led Zeppelin :P (unlikely but ya can always wish!)

    admin
    January 8th, 2008 7:02 pm

that would be like the sweetest set of headlining acts ever, so therefore it is highly unlikely :(. I’m not sure about radiohead yet, i need to do a bit of research into that :)

    thanks for the comment!

    January 11th, 2008 9:10 am

i think if rage did play they would be sunday without a doubt.

even if a band at the moment like the foos is bigger, rage ain’t played in the UK for years, it’s a big thing.

    January 13th, 2008 3:12 pm

pretty sure if rage play itll make the festival for loads of people i know it will be one of the best days of my life if they do

    January 14th, 2008 12:12 pm

As I said in post 12 above, I heard they were still trying to get another ‘big name’ headliner. I’ve heard from a couple of sources, including my mate, that this is likely to be Metallica. Which would relegate The Verve or Kasabian to a second headliner slot.

    Stuart Edwards
    January 14th, 2008 3:14 pm

It’d definatley be The Verve because Kasabian fit the slot of “new band”, plus you’ve still got a British headliner then.

Bring on Metallica, Kasabian and Rage!!

    Jonny Miller
    January 15th, 2008 9:35 am

The Verve would make great headliners. I saw them at Manchester Central in December and they were superb. They played a strong, long set of really good material old and new.

I don’t think Green Day should headline. People are sick of seeing bands of that ilk at festivals. We need more classy bands to start playing festivals. Most people i know agree with this. They’re sick of watching bands that nobody really likes or dislikes; they’re just time-slot fillers. No one’s really got a passionate like or dislike for them.

Personally i’d love the headliners to be..

    RATM
    The Verve
    Radiohead (although it’s pretty unlikely)

Then again it’d be great to see QOTSA there too….

    admin
    January 15th, 2008 11:16 am

thanks for the lengthy comment. I think it would be nice to see a good old british band headline to be honest! Radiohead i think is now out of the question really, i’ll have to have a read up about that though

    Stuart Edwards
    January 15th, 2008 12:00 pm

I’m sure Radiohead said they’d never play Leeds/Reading…

And if people aren’t passionate about Green Day then I’ll eat my hat, people either love them or despise them. I generally find that the ‘despiser’s’ usually don’t have a valid reason to dislike them either, they just bandwagon.

If the Metallica rumours are true then I’ll be happy. So long as it means Rage are there too.

Smashing Pumpkins for me were the perfect headliners last year, a huge band whose songs captured the hearts of millions. And had recently reformed so it was most peoples first chance to see them for years.

rage against the machine are awful!
who wants to see a big goth band on sunday night at leeds. no thankyou!

finally, an actually english (And even better mancunion) band playing at leeds
    wow

    January 16th, 2008 11:55 am

Yeah there is a post on the main page about Oasis playing, go and check it out.

I’m sorry but i don’t think rage are a “goth” band. take slipknot or someone like that. If Rage headline they will get a bloody huge crowd! Thanks for the comments though! Keep reading :)

    Stuart Edwards
    January 16th, 2008 12:41 pm

Rage are NOT goth in the slightest and if your going to say things like that about them then you obviously have about as accurate musical knowledge as…well, someone who is very narrow minded.

Their hard rock with rap influences. And their one of the biggest and most passionate bands in the world which a huge amount of people want to see headline.

    Adie10
    January 17th, 2008 12:28 pm

an who said oasis arent very rocky there a rock an roll band u must be “very narrow minded” ey stew an av seen RATM an i admit they are not goth an r decent but dont even come close to oasis an it would be an imbarasment to the leeds fest if they even shared the same oxygen as oasis

hey man i approved this comment but i’m afraid that the other two had to be deleted because of some of the language that you used. I am please that you use my site, but i would appreciate it more if you continue to do so in a way that is respective to all the users.

    January 19th, 2008 6:07 am

I’ve read somewhere that The Killers might be headlining. One for the rumour mill maybe, but would they really come over with no new album to promote? I remember them saying after T In The Park last year that they had ‘laid Sam’s Town to rest’ - surely they wouldn’t come over to promote Sawdust, which is just a b-sides album? Anyway, I’ll do some digging…..

    Durkin

    rage

    January 23rd, 2008 3:15 am

Bit of an indie kid right?
And if comparing Rage to Oasis, you’re way out of your league people.
Hey, if you want to listen to Oasis and be mindwashed into thinking it’s decent music so be it, but Rage has passion in their music, they dont swagger around being cocky thinking they’re all that when they’re blatantly not

    Durkin
    January 23rd, 2008 6:35 am

I’m not the biggest fan of Oasis, but i would say they definitely have passion in their music. I like Rage a lot though and agree, they do have a lot of passion. I like Oasis because they are so blatantly British. The arrogance is just funny if you don’t take it too seriously!

    ShakeyJake
    January 23rd, 2008 1:09 pm

to be honest, i would love it (although its clearly not gunna happen) if the chilis were in there again, and i know im probly gunna get bombarded by people saying they sucked last year and to be quite honest they did compared to when i saw them at the M.E.N in july ‘06. but they ARE an awesome band and they AINT past it as some people think after last years performances. the closing Set at Leeds last year was their final gig of a year and a half long Tour and i think they were just absolutely Nackered to be honest.

    BigAl
    January 24th, 2008 3:03 pm

I love Oasis on CD but live they are dulllll. In my opinion not a festival band, you need someone to get the crowd going,RHCP last year were boring, like the last post said probably knackerd from touring.Hopefully RATM will be on on the Friday, dont like to think of what would happen if they were on on Sunday night, its mental enough as it is without being hyped up on Rage.Rancid and NOFX would be good aswell.

    January 26th, 2008 5:43 am

i well want Oasis to headline along with
wunt be bovered about Rage cos dnt listen to much of their stuff - but wud bring in a massive crowd - the verve wud be crap live

i tink da main focus shud be on dance tent - i tink Daft Punk shud headline leeds fest - ideal line up wud be

    1.oasis
    2.daft punk
    3.kasabian

    Durkin
    January 26th, 2008 6:34 am

I’m so glad I bought my ticket a few days after last years festival finished, because if Rage do headline (which I have had my fingers crossed for weeks for) then the tickets are going to be snapped up in no time

    Durkin
    January 26th, 2008 1:16 pm

i agree. I think its going to be really difficult to get hold of tickets if Rage play. To be honest i think its going to be really hard to get tickets whoever plays. Leeds seems to get more popular every year. Thanks for the comment :)

Anyone that says The Verve aren’t worthy headliners at a festival obviously have never seen them live and so shouldn’t really express an opinion. Have you never heard of their famous Haigh Hall show and the Urban Hymns tour took in 46 dates around the world including 13 in North America. Richard Ashcroft possesses one of the best voices of any rock band and Nick McCabe is an excellent guitarist.

    Sunday: Metallica, QOTSA

    from quite a reasonable source

    February 17th, 2008 5:10 pm

Have you all forgotten that Metallica are rumoured to be headlining the Sunday night??!!
It would be totally awesome to see them play at Leeds again! And to finish off the festival with them would be even better!
I can’t see Kasabian having enough decent songs to fill a headline slot!
Rage Against The Machine would be a total dream come true, not just for me, but for so many people.
Can’t stand Radiohead, so really hoping they don’t get a headline slot.
The Verve were ace… A few years ago. Not anymore, and definately not for a festival.
I’d love to see someone like Fall Out Boy headlining the Saturday, though I know it’s extremely unlikely.
Aaaaannnyyywwwhhooooo, just wanted to say that =)

I also saw above someone wanting to see Feeder. ME TOO!
I dont think Kasabian (how ever much i like them) have enough material to headline.
And stop dissing the Verve, they arent that bad :) I reckon it will be RATM, Killers (hope to god) and Metalica or something rockish.
Or QOTSA? :) one can hope..

RATM, METALLICA, FOO FIGHTERS, REM, THE OFFSPRING, GREEN DAY (v unlikey), MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE (please god no….)GNR.

    Durkin
    February 26th, 2008 3:13 pm

    February 28th, 2008 12:14 pm

    heyy
    can you buy a ticket
for saturday and sunday, camping on the saturday night?
if so how much would it be?
    thanks
    xxx

    Durkin
    March 2nd, 2008 9:12 am

I’m not sure if you can do that. You could get two day tickets I suppose. I also seem to remember that my friend got a Friday to sunday ticket. I’m sorry though, I really don’t know how he got it :)

    beth
    March 3rd, 2008 6:21 am

You can’t buy two day tickets and camp…
Also, pumpkins played last year, although it was amazing, they wont do it again. All these people saying who ‘they have heard has been confirmed’ seem to be forgetting that the headliners are american guitar bands, Kasabian, The Verve, Oasis, Arctic Monkeys therefore will not be playing as they way too big to do anything but headline.
    My prediction for the top 3;
    Killers,
    RATM,
    Foo Fighters
    xx

    Durkin
    March 3rd, 2008 11:00 am

Whats to stop you camping in between the two days i don’t understand? Its just the same as getting a sunday ticket and camping on overnight :)

As for the american bands yes its true, but some of the comments on this post are old now!

    thanks for the comment

would love to see the following

    friday: foo fighters/gnr
    sat: Radiohead/arctic monkeys
    sun: Green day

would also enjoy feeder, cribs, shambles to be second headliners in any order

    Heeeyy,
im almost too excited to hear that Rage may be playing, they are on my list of bands to see before i die. so are Metallica coincidently so yay! i hope they both play.

In terms of saturday i think QOTSA! Bands like Oasis shouldn’t bother with festivals like Leeds i think they should loosen up on the indie/blatently crap ‘rock and roll’ bands that it’s taken to getting to play recently they are general quite boring and samey. No offence.

    If only SOAD would play…….. :) x

    March 5th, 2008 6:38 am

thanks for the comment. SOAD would be awesome :D

I really would hate to see Rage Against The Machine there, they are too heavy for Leeds, bands like that should stick to Download were all of the crowd there are fans. My dream list would be:
    Friday: Foo Fighters or Oasis
    Saturday: The Offspring or G’n'R
    Sunday: Muse or Green Day
Ive left an American option each night just encase this all american headliners rumour is true.
I’d also like to see QOTSA, Strokes, Sum 41, Bloc Party or The Offspring to be there.

    March 6th, 2008 3:35 am

Rage Against The Machine and Metallica r way 2 heavy 4 leeds so i hope they dnt play lol nd i dont want the verve 2 headline bc they r headlining v and Kasabian r not good enuf 2 headline but thats my oppinion lol :D

    dream line up would b

    *mcr
    *the killers
    *foos

    :P

    March 6th, 2008 10:40 am

RATM and Metalica cant both be headlining could they? This would mean there’d be two ‘rock-esque’ headliners, theres usually just one. Its not gonna be The Verve either cause they’re headlining ‘V’! xx

    T Slack
    March 6th, 2008 10:41 am

Having said that…lets just resurrect Freddie Murcury and have Queen play… can you IMAGINE!!!! lol x

    Durkin
    March 6th, 2008 11:31 am

the verve won’t play because its been announced that all the headliners are American!

    ali
    March 8th, 2008 6:40 pm

Kasabian can’t be headlining as they are already confirmed to be playing at Creamfields over the same weekend.

Can’t see The Verve playing because they’re already confirmed to be playing at V festival.

And, as been previously said, it has been announced by Melvin Benn (MD of festivals at Mean Fiddler) that all the headliners are American.

    Top line up:
    RATM
    Foo Fighters/Greenday
    Metallica

    March 8th, 2008 8:02 pm

thanks for the comment! yup, all the headliners are american this year. I would have liked to see an English band play a headline slot to be honest

    simon
    March 9th, 2008 11:45 am

Wow if Metallica are there, it would be a classical festival..they are the greatest metal band around and will show other bands how to really perform..Kasabian are a good band to have also.! would have preferred Arctic Monkeys but ahh well..Rage Against The Machines are pretty crap..bring in Green Day
    Green Day
    Arctic Monkeys
    Metallica
Now that would be an amazing festival….!

hey all again, i completely disagree that RATM and Metallica are ‘too rock’ for Leeds just look at download this year Jimmy eat world are headling! what does that tell you? all i know is that every rock-esque band i saw last year had double the atmosphere than any of the others

Durkin i think your right too
it would be loads good to have an english headliner

also does anyone know if you can buy tickets from HMV like last year? all my friends did but me so it was great for them as there was no nervous waiting around for days incase it didnt come! haha :)

    Durkin
    March 10th, 2008 6:59 am

One -> a few people have asked me about HMV now and i’m not really sure to be honest! I will try and find out this week.

    thanks for the comment!

Are you sure bowt Metallica??? they were headliners about 5 years ago!!! RATM will be excellent, not sure bowt Kasabian, are they really big enough to headline Leeds????

    the_dog
    March 10th, 2008 1:17 pm

If it was possible for me at Leeds Festival 2008 (coz i like the old stuff, would be:

    (1) Metallica
    (2) AC/DC
    (3) Iron Maiden
    (4) Guns ‘n Roses
    (5) Led Zeppelin
    (5) Queen

    Joey Deacon
    March 11th, 2008 11:03 am

The headliners are all american guitar bands, this is what the fella who organises the festival said a while ago.

HMV tickets will be on sale on the tuesday morning

Haha I love how some of you get on your high horse giving your opinion about how other people’s taste is somehow wrong. Everyone’s taste is individual so how can you knock it? No one’s right here.
Personally radiohead would be amazing to watch. I have a feeling the smaller stages are going to be where I’m at this year as I feel like everyday has to be a bit different and so far, metallica? ratm? not classing them as the same kind of music but there’s nothing striking about either of them that set them apart, we want some variety! Foo fighters… we wish… goshhh the police would be amazing at leeds we need some good classic stufffff Biffy were great last year they deserve main stage but to be honest it was so much better in the tent. INCUBUSSSSS why are they nottt playingggg they’d be amazing. gosh!

    Breen
    March 14th, 2008 4:12 pm

    Nicolalala…nothing striking setting them apart??

Rage were WORSHIPPED, havnt played in…8 years, 9? and have a massive fanbase….and ‘Tallica…well, they’re just THE metal band. You dont even have to like metal to be a fan!! Theyd get a rite crowd, same with RATM.

Also Rage….De La Rocha raps. Altho yeah i no u sed ur not classing them as the same type o music….police WOULD be good! Seeing em in June ;) presumin Sting dunt hav a sore throat agen lol

N the foos…..hmm thtd be really great but i dnno, are they done touring? A mate saw em, wish i cudv, apparantly they were excellent sepsh wi Serj in support (he IS at download btw, so dnno bout Leeds)

    Nicolalala
    March 15th, 2008 3:50 pm

Ah hum see it’s the generalising, everyone didn’t/don’t worship RATM. But I agree they would get a big crowd, but all the headliners do every year anyway? Everypne’s so drunk they watch bands they’ve never even dreamt of listening to never mind watching.
I see your point but either way I don’t particularly enjoy metallica and i’m sure i’m not the only one.
Oh and the police? I highly doubt they’ll be at leeds but I saw them in Cardiff in october and they were amazing. I am from manchester but i wanted to see them somewhere else ha lucky eh?
Foo Fighters are doing london and manchester this year but not sure about anywhere else i’m seeing them in June.

    Danny
    March 29th, 2008 8:19 am

    Possibly?? My thoughts are:

    Friday: Metallica
    Saturday: Rage
    Sunday: The Killers

    Queens Supporting Rage
    Slipknot or Bullet supporting Metallica
Bloc Party or the kooks main support for Killers

I also can say that My Chemical Romance are playing on one of the days as a friend has toured with them and has recently spoken to them. You dont beleive it if you don’t have to, but thats what i heard.
